Sand: The Southeast's Most Widespread Sediment

Sand is perhaps the most recognizable sediment in the Southeast. Found on beaches, barrier islands, riverbanks, and throughout much of the Coastal Plain, sand particles are larger than silt and clay but smaller than gravel. Much of the region's coastal sand consists of quartz, which is highly resistant to weathering and can survive long transport distances.

The Atlantic Coastal Plain, stretching from Virginia through Florida, contains vast deposits of sandy sediments that were laid down by ancient shorelines as sea levels fluctuated over millions of years. These sandy deposits create well-drained soils that support pine forests and many of the Southeast's agricultural systems.

Gravel: The Coarsest Common Sediment

Gravel consists of larger rock fragments, including pebbles, cobbles, and small stones. Fast-moving water has enough energy to transport these larger particles, depositing them when stream velocity decreases.

Gravel-rich deposits are especially common in upland regions of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia, where erosion continually breaks down older rock formations. These sediments help create aquatic habitats that support fish and other freshwater organisms.

Silt: The Transitional Sediment

Silt particles are smaller than sand but larger than clay. They feel smooth and flour-like when dry and slippery when wet. Because silt is easily transported by water, it commonly accumulates in river floodplains, wetlands, and estuaries throughout the Southeast.

Silt-rich sediments are important because they often contain nutrients that support agriculture. Many fertile river valleys in the Southeast owe their productive soils to centuries of silt deposition during seasonal flooding.

Clay: The Finest Sediment

Clay is made up of extremely small mineral particles that can remain suspended in water for long periods before settling. These particles create dense soils that retain water and nutrients effectively but often drain slowly.

Clay-rich soils are especially common in the Piedmont region, which stretches from Alabama through Georgia and the Carolinas into Virginia. The Piedmont's distinctive red clay developed through the long-term weathering of ancient crystalline rocks. Unlike the sandy Coastal Plain, Piedmont soils generally contain more clay and less sand.
